JOHNNY CASH SIGNS WITH DEF AMERICAN RECORDINGS

BURBANK, Calif., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The legendary "Man In Black," Johnny Cash, has signed a worldwide exclusive recording contract with Def American Recordings, it was announced today by label owner Rick Rubin. Cash, the only entertainer in the history of recorded music to have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has sold more than 50 million records worldwide in his celebrated 38-year career. Cash joins an eclectic roster that includes the Black Crowes, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Slayer and the Jayhawks.
Rubin will not only be Cash's new label boss but will also serve as Cash's producer. Rubin has recently produced "Wandering Spirit," the critically acclaimed solo effort by Mick Jagger, and the multiplatinum "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to name a few.
"To work with Johnny Cash will be an honor," said Rubin. "I have respected him for years, both as a performer and a writer, and it is going to be a pleasure having him with Def American.
Mercury Polygram Nashville President Luke Lewis said, "We hate to see Johnny move, however, we wish him the best." Cash's releases will be distributed via Polygram International, who handles Def American in the United Kingdom, Europe and other foreign markets and through WEA Distribution in North America.
The usually reserved Cash was elated about the upcoming recording projects with Rubin at the helm. "I'll be expanding my scope of activity while experiencing the excitement of today's contemporary music," said Cash. "I look forward to exploring the kind of artistic freedom, creativity and open-mindedness that I knew with the Memphis rockabilly sound."
