JOHN WEITZEL INC. WINS TOP BOEING HONOR

SEATTLE, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- For its efforts in supporting The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), John Weitzel Inc., of Wichita, Kan., has been named the 1993 Boeing Small Business Supplier of the Year, Boeing announced today.
The company was selected from more than 32,000 small businesses throughout the United States that supply parts and services to Boeing.
Founded during the 1940s to support the war effort, John Weitzel Inc. has been a Boeing supplier for more than 46 years. Nominated for the award by the Wichita Division of the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, the company provides sheet metal fabrication and general machining of aircraft parts for the 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 aircraft, and various military programs.
In nominating the company for the supplier award, the Wichita Division cited John Weitzel Inc.'s "proven ability to respond favorably to all new technology and culture initiatives that have been requested by the customer in a cost-efficient and quality-conscious manner. By constantly updating management and manufacturing methods, a consistently competitive position in their industry has been attained, and based on their long, successful track record, there is no indication that this will change."
During June 1992, John Weitzel Inc. demonstrated its ability to meet customer needs in a memorable way. In responding to a priority order that Boeing's primary supplier could not meet, John Weitzel's plant engineer and production foreman discovered that the 9-foot 3-inch part couldn't be built unless they relocated a machine or punched a hole in the wall. Moving the machine would have taken a couple of days, so the hole was punched and Boeing received the part with time to spare.
The company, which occupies over 40,000 square feet and has 68 employees, has facilities in Wichita and Attica, Kan. Recent purchases of large-capacity equipment for high-speed machining, hot form and hydro-press work have allowed for expansion into areas normally found in much larger organizations.
John Weitzel Inc. has received a variety of other awards, including the U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) Administrator's Award for Excellence in 1985, 1992 and 1993; and the SBA's Region VII Subcontractor of the Year Award for 1993.
Boeing Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frank Shrontz presented the award to company President Phillip Weitzel.
