JOHN T. OLIVER JR. AND RICHARD E. ANTHONY JOIN SYNOVUS FINANCIAL CORP. BOARD

 COLUMBUS, Ga., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- James H. Blanchard, chairman of the board of Synovus Financial Corp. (NYSE: SNV), today announced that John T. Oliver Jr. and Richard E. Anthony have joined the board of directors of Synovus.
 Oliver is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of First Commercial Bancshares, Inc. and of First National Bank of Jasper, Jasper, Ala. First Commercial Bancshares and its Alabama banking subsidiaries joined the Synovus affiliated group of companies effective Dec. 31, 1992.
 Oliver joined the First National Bank of Jasper in 1955, was elected its president in 1959 and its chief executive officer in 1967. Prior to joining the First National Bank of Jasper, Oliver served in the Judge Advocate General's Corp., U.S. Army. He received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Banking of the South.
 Oliver is a member of the board of trustees of the University of Alabama System and has served three terms as president pro tempore. He is a trustee of Walker College and the state of Alabama Department of Archives and History. He served two terms as a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He is a past president of the Jasper Area Chamber of Commerce and the Jasper United Fund Campaign.
 Anthony is president of First Commercial Bancshares, Inc. and chairman of the board and chief executive officer of First Commercial Bank, Birmingham, Ala.
 Prior to the formation of First Commercial Bank, Anthony was executive vice president and manager of the Corporate Banking Division at AmSouth Bank, Birmingham. He received a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and an MBA from the Darden School, University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
 Anthony serves on the boards of several civic and professional organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club of Central Alabama and the Lakeshore Foundation. He is currently chairman of the American Lung Association of Alabama and captain of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club. He also serves on the UAB President's Council and the University of Alabama President's Cabinet. Anthony is co-chairman of the University of Alabama Capital Campaign, which has a $165 million goal. He is past president of the Alabama Golf Association and a past board member of the Birmingham Kiwanis Club.

 Synovus Financial Corp. has assets of $5.2 billion and operates 31 community banks in Georgia, Alabama and north Florida. Synovus owns 80.7 percent of Total System Services, Inc. (NYSE: TSS), a bankcard data processing company, and Synovus Securities, Inc., a full-service brokerage firm.
