JOHN SCANLON TO JOIN ABERNATHY/MACGREGOR

 NEW YORK, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Abernathy/MacGregor Group, Inc. announced today that John Scanlon will join the financial and crisis communications firm as a partner and the firm's name will change to Abernathy/MacGregor/Scanlon, both effective June 1.
 Over more than a quarter-century, Scanlon has become one of New York's and the nation's best-known public relations practitioners, advising corporations as well as countries on the use of communications during periods of crisis or great change.
 The 58-year-old, Bronx-born Scanlon is widely credited with pioneering the use of public relations techniques in support of clients' litigation objectives. Some of his most widely acclaimed past work has been for media clients in such courtroom and other confrontations as Westmoreland vs. CBS; Laxalt vs. Sacramento Bee; Lakian vs. Boston Globe and, more recently, for the Tribune Company in the litigious Daily News strike in New York. He has assisted the tobacco industry in product liability disputes and helped defend GD Searle against claims involving its intra-uterine birth control device, CU 7. Recently, he organized and managed the NYNEX-sponsored ABC News special, "Answering Children's Questions," with Peter Jennings and President Clinton.
 "John Scanlon is, of course, a legend in the business. But he is also a terrific counselor and teacher. He brings a whole new dimension to our ability to serve clients in times of crisis," said managing partner James T. MacGregor.
 "I'm proud and delighted by the opportunity for further growth and challenge as a part of the extraordinarily competent and diligent team assembled and directed by Jim Abernathy and Jim MacGregor," Scanlon said. "In the past I've worked with them and against them and I know how good they are. You don't get a client list and respect like this firm has by accident," he added.
 Abernathy/MacGregor provides communications counsel and investor and public relations to corporate clients, with particular concentrations in the media, entertainment, banking and financial services industries. Its clients include Avon Products, The Bank of New York, Communications Satellite Corp., King World Productions, Strong Funds, Mexico's Grupo Televisa and Gemex, Turner Broadcasting, Upjohn Company, and Volvo North America.
 While he is best known for crisis-related work, Scanlon's 25-year career embraces the full range of public relations assignments. Scanlon:
 -- helped introduce Newsday to the New York City market;
 -- served as press secretary to the chairman of the Municipal Assistance Corporation as he pulled New York back from the brink of bankruptcy in the mid-1970s;
 -- handled marketing PR for such movies as "Gandhi," "All that jazz," "Absence of Malice" and "Cry Freedom";
 -- represented such international clients as the Cory Aquino campaign in the Philippines and the governments of Puerto Rico, Columbia, Greece, Cyprus and Spain;
 -- served such corporate clients as American Express, Mobil Corp., Nissan, NYNEX, Pacific Gas and Electric and Whittle Communications.
