JOHN NEERHOUT, JR. ELECTED TO ENGINEERING ACADEMY

JOHN NEERHOUT, JR. ELECTED TO ENGINEERING ACADEMY
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- John Neerhout, Jr., executive vice president and director of Bechtel Group Inc., has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering in Washington, D.C.
Neerhout, 61, was honored in recognition of "contributions to engineering and construction of large mining and petroleum projects, and for technical and managerial leadership." Election to the academy is among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer.
In one of the most challenging assignments of his career, Neerhout is currently serving as project chief executive of Eurotunnel, the Anglo-French megaproject to build a tunnel link and railway beneath the English Channel -- among the greatest engineering and construction projects of the century. He is seconded from Bechtel, working in London, and retains his Bechtel title and his position on the executive committee.
Joining Bechtel in 1966, Neerhout held a variety of increasingly responsible engineering and project positions with the company's Mining and Metals Division, becoming head of the division in 1976.
Neerhout was posted to London in 1979 as manager of Bechtel's petroleum and chemical operations in the Eastern Hemisphere. He returned to the United States in 1983, appointed president of Bechtel Petroleum Inc., as well as a director of Bechtel Group Inc. and a member of its executive committee.
In 1985, Neerhout was named president of Bechtel's combined petroleum, chemical, mining and metals, and various civil operations. He was elected executive vice president of Bechtel Group, the parent company, in 1986.
In February 1990, he was appointed project chief executive of Eurotunnel.
Prior to joining Bechtel, Neerhout held supervisory positions with Todd Shipyards Corp. of San Francisco.
He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, is a licensed mechanical engineer in California, and is also a chartered engineer in the United Kingdom. He also holds professional engineering licenses in nine other state.
Neerhout is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Petroleum Institute, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the British-North American Committee of the National Planning Association, and the United States Committee on Large Dams; a director of Homestake Mining Co.; and a trustee of the American University of Beirut.
His induction into the Academy of Engineering, along with others honored this year, will take place during the organization's annual meeting at the Academy building, Washington, Sept. 29 and 30.
Along with the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, established in 1964, shares the responsibility under a

Congressional charter to advise the U.S. government on questions of science and technology.
Bechtel, headquartered in San Francisco, is one of the world's leading engineering, construction and development companies.
