JOHN HUGHES TO WRITE, PRODUCE "PEANUTS" FOR WARNER BROS.
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Filmmaker John Hughes will write and produce a live-action comedy based on Charles Schulz's beloved comic strip, "Peanuts," to be distributed by Warner Bros. The announcement was made by Bruce Berman, Warner Bros. Pictures' president of Worldwide Theatrical Production.
Hughes, who is currently producing his screenplay of "Dennis the Menace" for Warner, visited extensively with Schulz at the latter's home in Santa Rosa, Calif., to discuss the essence of the many characters who comprise the enduringly popular "Peanuts" strip.
"I want to bring the complexity and sophistication of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and the other 'Peanuts' characters to the screen without losing the simplicity and humor that has made Charles Schulz's work so unique," said Hughes.
Added Schulz, "I hope that John will combine the characters of 'Peanuts' with the live-action storytelling that he does so well to create a classic film for the entire family. This is an exciting opportunity for both of us."
The "Peanuts" comic strip follows the lives of a group of children whose personalities expose the essence of the human psyche in simple, warmly funny episodes. From Charlie Brown, the perpetual loser, to Schroeder, the intellectual pianist, to Lucy, the domineering complainer and Snoopy, the romantically fantasizing beagle, each character strikes a chord of recognition deep inside millions of loyal readers.
The strip spawned the long-running theatrical hit musical, "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown," which opened off-Broadway in 1968, as well as several television specials. This is the first time that a live-action version of "Peanuts" will be brought to the big screen.
