 JOHN HANCOCK FINANCIAL SERVICES CALLS FOR
 BUSINESS JOURNALISM COMPETITION ENTRIES
 BOSTON, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- John Hancock Financial Services has issued a call for entries as it celebrates the 26th year of its prestigious Awards for Excellence in Business and Financial Journalism competition.
 The postmark deadline for entries is Jan. 15, 1993. For applications, call Kathy Taylor at 617-572-6394.
 The program provides $5,000 awards for entries adjudged to have contributed significantly to public understanding of business and finance in a given year.
 Awards are granted to writers in seven categories: magazines of general interest; financial-business newspapers and magazines; newspapers with circulation above 300,000; newspapers with circulation 100,000 to 300,000; newspapers with circulation below 100,000; financial-business columns and deadline news (all publications).
 The Awards for Excellence competition was founded to recognize that lucid interpretation and reporting of business and financial news is essential to the economic strength of the nation and the financial well- being of investors and consumers.
 Winners in the 25th Annual Competition were: writers for magazines of general interest category, Jonathan Beaty and S.C. Gwynne, Time; writers for financial publications category, Alan Murray, The Wall Street Journal; and writers of deadline news category, Martha Groves, Victor Zonana, Kathy Kristof, Bruce Horovitz, Susan Moffat, Daniel Akst and Tom Furlong, Los Angeles Times.
 Also winning were: writers for newspapers with circulation above 300,000 category, Gerard O'Neill, Dick Lehr, Bruce Mohl, Brian C. Mooney, Karen Douglass, The Boston Globe; writers for newspapers with circulation 100,000 to 300,000 category, Mike Casey and Russell Carollo, Dayton Daily News; writers for newspapers with circulation under 100,000 category, Eric Blom, Portland Press Herald and financial-business columnists category, Jane Bryant Quinn, Newsweek, and Allan Sloan, New York Newsday.
