JOGGERS AND 'BLADERS MAY NOW SAFELY RUN AHEAD OF MUGGERS AND OTHER ATTACKERS WITH NEW SIREN AND SPRAY DEVICE

MOBILE, Ala., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Running or jogging to stay fit, or perhaps rollerblading for muscle tone and flexibility, have become integral parts of many Americans' fitness plans. What also has become common, however, is growing concern about the benefits of these fitness activities vs. the possibility of becoming a target for muggers and other dawn or dusk hoodlums out to grab your wallet or new sneakers. Wild or vicious dogs, too, can also block your path and spoil your run.
Certainly, anyone who's a regular at his nearby running track is looking for ways to enjoy these otherwise healthy pursuits with greater peace of mind. Now, thanks to the crime experts at Defenders Network, an Alabama-based company established to develop self-defense products, fitness enthusiasts can add a new piece of lightweight gear to their sports packs -- one that keeps them running ahead of criminals.
Defenders Networks' newest product, called Hidden Edge(TM), is a spray-and-siren device that looks like a camera...a portable radio...or a cellular phone. This mini crime fighter is really a canister of pepper spray, a 100 percent organic, environmentally safe chemical made from cayenne peppers. When used against a foe, the spray can render him helpless for about 30 minutes -- enough time to possibly run for help and out of reach. In addition, the device also screams at a piercing 130 dB sound level to send the attacker scurrying for the underbrush.
Most importantly, Hidden Edge Siren-and-Spray, with worldwide patents pending, features a unique "safety pin" that disarms the unit if the attacker attempts to use the device against its owner. The genius of Defenders Network, its president Helmut Julinot, designed a wrist strap onto Hidden Edge "Safety Pin" spray that allows the user to control the device. If yanked in an attempt to steal it, the wrist strap would activate a disarming pin which drops the spray canister harmlessly into the body of the camouflaged device.
"Joggers and other late-night or early morning sports buffs -- anyone in an isolated area at any time of day -- have become targets. While many so-called defense products place the user at peril if the criminal manages to gain control of the item, this product places the control in the hands of the consumer. Pepper spray is an effective, safe defense against an attacking dog, drug addict or drunk," commented Julinot.
For those joggers concerned about personal safety, Julinot recommends that they invest in a set of "military style" dog tags -- far less alluring than the bulge of a wallet. Since it is important that some form of identification be carried at all times in case of an emergency, such as a fainting spell, the dog tags can be designed to contain information such as address, phone number or pertinent medical details.
Since Hidden Edge siren-spray weighs only a few ounces, it can easily be tucked into a shirt pocket; it won't get in the way of a vigorous run around the park.
Defenders Network, known for the safety products it has produced for law enforcement agencies worldwide, developed Hidden Edge with input from police, enforcement agencies and rape counseling centers.
Defenders Network "Hidden Edge" Safety Devices will be available nationwide by the end of the year, at under $50. The company also manufactures personal alarms for less than $30, and car alarms that lock into a car stereo cassette slot for under $40.
Consumers may call 800-513-1984 for information on where to purchase Hidden Edge.
