JOE M. RODGERS NAMED CHAIRMAN OF BERLITZ INTERNATIONAL
NEW YORK, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Berlitz International, Inc.

(NYSE: BTZ) announced today the election of Joe M. Rodgers as chairman and acting chief executive officer of Berlitz International, Inc., to replace David L. Shaffer who has resigned.
Rodgers has served as an independent director of Berlitz since June 1990. Rodger's business career spans 30 years, including management of several multi-national companies with offices in Amsterdam, Athens, and Riyadh. Rodgers served as United States Ambassador to France from July 1985 until January 1989.
Shaffer has resigned due to heavy responsibilities he has assumed as a result of his association with Maxwell Communication Corp. plc and Macmillan, Inc. He will remain a member of the Berlitz board of directors.
In accepting the appointment, Rodgers said: "I have been asked by the board of directors of Berlitz to assume this responsibility at an important time in our company's history. Berlitz is a financially strong company with an outstanding business operation headed by its able president and COO, Elio Boccitto. It is a freestanding company with a board of directors comprised of a majority of outside, independent directors. It is a company with a tremendous future worldwide.
"It is important for Berlitz to maintain its independence from the Maxwell Group to enable it to achieve full value for its shareholders. The board has asked me to play an active role in light of Mr. Shaffer's resignation and I am prepared to devote the time and effort necessary to ensure that Berlitz's bright future is fully realized."
Rodgers also serves as chairman of the JMR Investment Group and as a director of AMR Corporation/American Airlines Inc., Willis-Corroon plc, BellSouth Telecommunications Inc., Third National Bank (Sun Trust), Gaylord Entertainment Company and several other NYSE international corporations.
