JOE D. HEUSI ELECTED EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE EQUITABLE
NEW YORK, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Joe D. Heusi has been elected an executive vice president of The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S., effective Sept. 1. The announcement was made today by Joseph J. Melone, Equitable's president and chief operating officer.
Heusi will be responsible for expanding Equitable's annuity business. The Equitable is a major force in the annuity business, with over $20 billion in annuity assets. Sales of annuities comprised 47 percent of the company's total individual premiums in 1991. The company is placing an increasing emphasis on building on its strength in the annuity market to meet the needs of the emerging growth market for retirement savings.
Heusi's insurance career began with Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company (VALIC), a subsidiary of American General Corporation, in 1968, where he served in positions of increasing responsibilities. In 1983, he was elected president and chief executive officer of VALIC and chairman and chief executive officer of American General Series Portfolio Company, VALIC's variable annuity operation. A dominant player in the qualified tax-deferred annuity market, VALIC is the 18th largest U.S. life insurance company in terms of assets.
Prior to joining The Equitable, Heusi was chief executive officer of Integon Corporation's Life Group.
"Joe has demonstrated his ability to profitably grow a large annuity company," stated Melone. "Since our strategy emphasizes increasing our market share in the retirement and savings markets, Joe's extensive experience and success in this business will be instrumental in achieving significant growth and profitability in these markets."
Heusi, 50-years-old, holds two undergraduate degrees from the Baldwin-Wallace College, Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio, and a master's degree in business from Columbia University Graduate School in New York City. In addition, he is a Registered Principal with the National Association of Securities Dealers.
Heusi is active in professional and community organizations and has served on the following civic board of directors: Concert Chorale of Houston, Rice University's Shephard School of Music, Business Volunteers for the Arts and the board of trustees for the Houston Ballet Foundation. He was most recently on the board of directors for the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony.
Heusi and his wife, Fran, reside in Greenwich, Conn.
The Equitable is one of the nation's premier life insurance companies and a world leader in asset management, with nearly $150 billion in assets under management. Its investment subsidiaries include Alliance Capital Management L.P., Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc., Equitable Capital Management Corporation and Equitable Real Estate Investment Management, Inc.
A pioneer throughout its 132-year history, The Equitable was the first company to introduce group insurance and variable life insurance. Equitable agents lead the industry in the number of agents holding the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) professional designations.
