JITNEY-JUNGLE STORES OF AMERICA TO USE ALTERNATIVE CFCs FROM DU PONT FOR REFRIGERATION AND COOLING EQUIPMENT

JACKSON, Miss., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Jitney-Jungle Stores of America will open the first grocery store in the nation designed and outfitted with refrigeration and cooling equipment using alternatives to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
The opening will take place in Forest, Miss., on Thursday, Jan. 14.
Mississippi Gov. Kirk Fordice will attend grand opening ceremonies for the new 25,000-square-foot Jitney, which contains state-of-the-art equipment using alternative refrigerants from Du Pont (NYSE: DD).
The nonflammable substitute, Du Pont's "Suva" HP80, is being used in the primary refrigeration systems in Jitney's new store, and other environmentally acceptable refrigerants are being used in other cooling devices such as freezers, display cases, ice machines and even a soft drink vending machine.
The "Suva" HP80 is a blend of three alternative products. It is more than 90 percent less ozone-depleting than R-502, the primary product it replaces. Also, it offers an 80 percent reduction in global warming potential when compared to the CFC-based refrigerants traditionally used in many grocery store systems.
These alternative refrigerants equally consider environmental acceptability, safety, performance, manufacturing and lower overall energy costs, according to Jim Riley, Jitney's vice president of engineering.
"This latest product offers supermarkets, in particular, an option to move away from all CFCs," Riley said. "While the new equipment and refrigerant is a costly investment, we felt it was critical to begin the phaseout of all CFCs as soon as possible. We've been informed that we may be operating the only grocery store in the world, as well as the nation, that has been specifically designed to meet environmental standards, We're proud to be the leader in the industry in this vitally important area," Riley said.
Riley said the opening of the store in Forest will set in motion a $4.9 million commitment to convert all Jitney-owned stores to environmentally acceptable equipment and refrigerants by the mid-1990s.
According to Riley, Jitney officials decided to initiate the costly environmental program despite the fact that companies are not presently required to follow such strict environmental standards.
He added that Jitney will purchase "Suva" HP62, a non-ozone- depleting refrigerant to directly replace "Suva" HP80 as it becomes available in the third quarter of 1993. This product's high energy efficiency makes it the option with the lowest total global warming potential and creates a CFC-free cooling system.
The Forest Jitney also will meet and exceed environmental standards with a heat reclaim system which saves substantial energy by using recycled heat from the cooling compressors to heat the building and water heater.
In addition, a $50,000 computerized system has been installed specifically to monitor and control the new refrigeration system in order to gain the maximum performance at the lowest operating costs while maintaining product integrity.
The grand opening ceremony for the Forest Jitney will begin at 8 a.m. and include an address by Fordice. Others on the program include Forest Mayor Fred Gaddis, Jitney Chairman Henry Holman and other officials.
Jitney-Jungle, the 137th largest private company in the United States, operates more than 70 supermarkets in Mississippi and is the state's largest retailer. The chain also operates stores in Memphis, Tenn., Little Rock, Ark., Pensacola, Fla., and various cities throughout Alabama.
