 LOS ANGELES, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- John W. Amerman, Mattel's chairman and chief executive officer, today announced the promotion of Jill Elikann Barad to president and chief operating officer of
Mattel, Inc. (NYSE: MAT). Formerly one of two presidents for Mattel


USA, Barad is also a member of the Mattel board of directors.
 "This promotion recognizes the substantial contributions Jill has made to Mattel's success, and her demonstrated ability to take on increased responsibility," Amerman said. "Under her direction the company's core Barbie doll business has almost doubled over the past four years, and this year is approaching $1 billion in worldwide sales. In addition, she has directed the establishment of a highly profitable large doll business, as well as successful new entries in the activity toys and plush categories."
 Amerman also announced the promotion of David Mauer, president of Mattel USA, to an expanded position responsible for U.S. marketing and sales of all company categories and brands. He will report to Jill Barad. "In less than two years, Dave has accomplished a major turnaround for the business under his responsibility by growing the company's core Hot Wheels and Disney Preschool and Infant brands, and launching an entry into the games category," he said.

 Barad, 41, received a bachelor's degree from Queen's College in 1973. She joined Mattel in 1981 as a product manager, and was named marketing director for the company's Barbie doll brand in 1982, a vice president in 1984, a senior vice president in 1985, executive vice president in 1986, president-girls and activity toys division in 1989, and president-Mattel USA in 1990. She was elected to the Mattel board of directors in 1991.
 Mauer, 43, received a bachelor's degree in economics from State University of New York at Stonybrook in 1969, and an M.B.A. from Wharton School of Business in 1972. He held brand management positions at Procter and Gamble and senior marketing positions with Pepsi Cola before beginning his toy industry career as executive vice president-marketing and marketing services for Kenner Parker Toys in 1981. He was promoted to president and general manager for Kenner Products in 1985, and president of Tonka Corporation's U.S. Toy Group in 1988.
 With net income of $118 million and revenues of $1.65 billion for 1991, Mattel last week reported continued growth in the first half of 1992. Net income for the first six months increased 31 percent to $38.2 million, and net sales were $730 million, up 23 percent from the year-ago period.
