JFK AIRPORT'S VETPORT ANIMAL CARE FACILITY OFFERS EXPANDED SERVICE

JFK AIRPORT'S VETPORT ANIMAL CARE FACILITY OFFERS EXPANDED SERVICE
NEW YORK, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Whether she's shipping a pet pony or a multimillion-dollar breeding stallion, Heidi Johnson, a broker for International Racehorse Transport of Old Brookville, N.Y., wants it to have the best of care.
Cookie Russo, of World-Wide Pet Transport in College Point, Queens, needs an airport facility where she knows that her clients' pets will be watered and fed, and have access to veterinary care during layovers.
That's why both clients of John F. Kennedy International Airport's new Vetport Animal Care Facility are thrilled with the newly expanded service that features on-site, 24-hour veterinary care for animals in transit, as well as traditional veterinary care for pets of employees and area residents.
"We're very fortunate to have such a facility for travelers coming through this area," says Russo, pointing out that few airports have such services.
"Many times animals need health check-ups and endorsement for overseas shipping. Because Vetport has U.S. Department of Agriculture- certified veterinarians, this can be accomplished on site."
She says the 24-hour operation is vitally important for the bulk of her clients, who are relocating executives. For example, she notes that some flights arrive during the early morning hours, and having such a service assures her that pets arriving at odd hours are properly cared for until they can be picked up the next morning.
"It is important that Vetport is run by veterinarians who can recognize problems and properly maintain the animals," notes Johnson. Such staffing "meets the horseman's needs," she says.
JFK is the official USDA port of import/export for livestock in the region. Its 33-year-old specialized facility for live animals shipped by air reopened last month to handle a wide range of animals from household pets to exotic zoological specimens. The facility also offers an on-site kennel for travelers' pets, a full range of veterinary services for all animals, and assistance with the shipment of pets traveling alone or with their owners on scheduled flights.
The facility is also home to the USDA's "Beagle Brigade," the official dogs used for detecting undeclared plants and foodstuffs.
Vetport, Inc. was the successful respondent to a request for proposals that the Port Authority sent to 83 firms in March of this year. According to Port Authority Chairman Richard C. Leone, of those firms who responded, Vetport's proposal was considered "superior on the basis of its experience, business plan, marketing plan and its proposed operation of the facility. We look forward to continuing this important service to animal shippers and pet owners through our relationship with Vetport, Inc."
