JERRY DEMPSEY RETIRES FROM WMX TECHNOLOGIES TO BECOME CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF PPG INDUSTRIES, INC.

 OAK BROOK, Ill., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- WMX Technologies, Inc. today announced that Jerry Dempsey, a senior vice president of the company, was retiring to become chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries, Inc. (NYSE: PPG), the Pittsburgh-based glass, coatings and chemicals company.
 WMX Technologies said that Dempsey would remain a member of its board of directors. "He has contributed much to our growth and to our people," said Dean L. Buntrock, chairman and chief executive officer of WMX Technologies. "PPG is a strong company and his accepting the opportunity to become its leader is understandable. I offer him my thanks and gratitude for all of his efforts and my sincerest congratulations on his new assignment."
 Dempsey joined WMX Technologies (previously named Waste Management, Inc.) as vice chairman in 1984 and was responsible for the company's strategic planning and long-range business development. In August 1985, he became responsible for the company's Chemical Waste Management, Inc. subsidiary and was its president and chief executive officer until he became its chairman in September 1991.
 Prior to joining WMX Technologies, Dempsey was president and chief operating officer of Borg-Warner Corp.
 Dempsey is a director of Chicago-based Navistar International Corp. He is a trustee and immediate past chairman of the board of the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. He is chairman of the Dean's Advisory Board for Clemson University's School of Engineering, a member of Clemson's Foundation Board, and the President's Advisory Council. He is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago, University Club of Chicago, Chicago Club, Chicago Committee and the Mid-America Committee.
 He is president of the Executives Breakfast Club of Oak Brook and vice chairman of The Executives' Club of Chicago. He is an elder at Christ Church of Oak Brook.
 Dempsey has served on the board of directors of Nalco Chemical Company, Naperville, Ill.; Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., Hampton, N.H.; the National Association of Manufacturers; the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry; the University Club of Chicago; and as chairman of The Brand Companies, Inc.
 He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and an MBA from Georgia State University.
