JERGENS OPENS NEW RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT FACILITY
CINCINNATI, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- At a ceremony today in

Cincinnati, The Andrew Jergens Company celebrated the opening of its new research and development facility.
Located adjacent to Jergens' headquarters, the research center is a five-story, 50,000-square-foot structure costing more than $7 million to construct. Present at the opening ceremony were regional, state and local officials as well as officers of Jergens and its corporate parents, Kao Corporation of America and Kao Corporation of Japan.
According to Jergens President Rodger V. Reed, the facility reflects Jergens' emphasis on serving the consumer. "The new Jergens research center represents a significant commitment on our part to consumer- oriented research and development. For the first time in our history, we have the on-site capability of measuring consumer reaction to new products and improvements to existing products. In addition to research capabilities, our new laboratory will include areas for consumer focus groups, interviews and consumer products testing. We feel this is a major step in our continuing efforts to develop the best possible products for our consumers nationwide."
Reed added that the facility will be key to Jergens' long-term growth objectives and will enable the company to determine more accurately what its consumers want. "We are very excited about where we are headed, and we believe this new addition will play a central role in our plans to become a stronger player in the personal care products industry in the U.S."
The research center, which was begun in October of 1990, will house laboratories and testing rooms as well as an attached pilot plant of 3,400 square feet. The facility was developed after extensive study of successful international research concepts and includes an open design for free exchange between researchers.
The research and development center was designed by architects KZF Incorporated of Cincinnati and constructed by the James N. Gray Construction Company, Lexington, Ky. The functional and aesthetic design reflects Cincinnati's proud historic heritage while pointing the company toward the future.
