JEFFERSON-PILOT HIGHEST BIDDER FOR PURCHASE OF KENTUCKY CENTRAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY

 GREENSBORO, N.C., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Jefferson-Pilot (NYSE: JP) announced today that it has been advised by the Commissioner of Insurance of the State of Kentucky, Don W. Stephens, that its bid for the purchase of the insurance business of Kentucky Central Life Insurance Company submitted on Friday, January 14, 1994, was the highest bid submitted by the companies participating in the bidding process.
 Commissioner Stephens has previously announced that he will make his recommendation regarding the disposition of Kentucky Central Life Insurance Company to the Rehabilitation Court by mid February.
 David Stonecipher, President of Jefferson-Pilot, emphasized the Company's commitment, if it is permitted to purchase the Kentucky Central Life Business, to substantial continuing operations in Lexington, Kentucky, and stated that Jefferson-Pilot is looking forward to becoming a part of the Lexington community.
