JEFFERSON SMURFIT CORPORATION ANNOUNCES $100 MILLION IN CAPITAL PROJECTS

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (JSC) has announced approval of more than $100 million in capital projects to expand its capabilities, modernize operations, and further improve quality and service to its customers. The capital monies will be applied to virtually all of JSC's business units, particularly its largest operations: corrugated containers, containerboard mills, folding cartons, and boxboard mills. Of the total amount, nearly two- thirds or $60 million pertains to new converting machinery.
James B. Malloy, president and chief executive officer, said, "This major investment in capital further supports our objective to supply our customers with the best possible products and services and to be cost effective in the process." Malloy added, "We continue to build our market share by ensuring that our products and services exceed -- not merely satisfy -- the expectations of our customers over the long term."
In the Container Division, capital projects will begin immediately and be completed during 1994. The division operates 55 plants in the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Capital projects for Container Division include:
 -- 3 new state-of-the-art corrugators
 -- 8 flexo-folder-gluers,
 -- 3 rotary die-cutters, and
 -- Numerous pre-feeders for flexo-folder-gluers, and automatic
 tie-balers.
For JSC's Folding Carton and Boxboard Mill Division, implementing the capital projects approved will start immediately with implementation completed in '94. The division operates 20 carton plants and five boxboard mills and is the nation's leading producer of folding cartons and clay-coated recycled boxboard. Significant capital projects approved for the division's converting/mill operations include:
-- Modernization of the finishing operations in 13 of its
 converting plants,
-- Back liner coater and 2 new main presses at the division's
Philadelphia, Pa., boxboard mill, and a new main press at its
 Wabash, Ind., boxboard mill.
-- 3 gravure register systems at Carol Stream, Ill., Atlanta, Ga.,
and Muncie, Ind., folding carton plants.
Earlier this year the Division invested more than $17 million for state-of-the-art printing and coating equipment to completely modernize its Morris, Ill., folding carton plant. This upgrade was in addition to the current capital approval.
For the Containerboard Mill Division, capital projects to further improve productivity and quality in the division's paperboard mills will begin immediately and be completed during 1994. The division operates eight mills which annually produce more than two million tons of kraft linerboard, corrugating medium, and mottled white liner. Capital approved includes a chip thickness screening system at the division's Fernandina Beach, Fla., mill. The new system is designed to increase fiber yield, provide more uniform pulp, and improve quality control.
Jefferson Smurfit Corporation, headquartered in St. Louis, Mo., is one of the nation's most broadly based paper, paperboard, and packaging companies. It is also America's No. 1 collector, marketer, recycler, and exporter of waste paper. JSC manages estimated annual sales of $4.5 billion and operates more than 180 mills and converting facilities in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
