The criterium event featured 20 of the world's best triathletes in a unique race. Instead of out-and-back or point-to-point bike and run segments, the athletes completed 20 laps of a 1.5 mile course -- 16 on the bike and the final four running. The criterium format, coupled with the race's 10 a.m. starting time, allowed many of the participants in the National Amateur Championship to be spectators for the pro event.
"We worked hard to design the first spectator-friendly triathlon," said race director Jack Caress. "The logistics of a typical triathlon make it nearly impossible to watch. Our new format allowed everyone to see the top professional triathletes more than 20 times on the course throughout this first-ever invitation-only event."
