JEEP-EAGLE AND THE WEATHER CHANNEL SPONSOR WINTER DRIVING TOUR

JEEP-EAGLE AND THE WEATHER CHANNEL SPONSOR WINTER DRIVING TOUR
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- As snow begins to cover the road, the first slip of the wheels causes your heart to jump into your throat, followed by a feeling of helplessness as the vehicle slides out of control.
For anyone who has lived through such a harrowing experience, there may be a way to avoid a reocurrence.
Controlling and even avoiding difficult situations on roads soaked by rain or covered with snow and ice is the central theme of the Jean- Paul Luc Winter Driving School in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
In an effort to bring the school's message to a larger audience, the Jeep-Eagle Division of Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) and The Weather Channel will sponsor a winter driving tour with former pro-rally driver Jean-Paul Luc from Dec. 14 through Jan. 9. The driving school also will be part of a celebrity ski event at Telluride, Colo. on Jan. 21-24.
The school, founded by Luc 10 years ago, will conduct a half-day driving course for local police, fire and emergency crews, bus drivers and driver's education teachers in Boston on Dec. 14-16, New York on Dec. 17-18, and Philadelphia on Jan. 7-9.
The school teaches how to avoid panic reactions and develop good reflexes, the theory of grip between the tire and road surface, the effect braking and accelerating have on transferring a vehicle's weight, the concepts of understeer and oversteer and other vehicle dynamics.
Participants will be among the first to test drive the new Eagle Vision, Jeep Grand Cherokees, Grand Wagoneers, and a Cherokee equipped with a police package in winter conditions.
"Most accidents don't just happen, they are caused by driving too fast and overreacting to unexpected elements," explained Luc, who has competed in the famous Paris-to-Dakar rallies. "We'll demonstrate and teach proven winter driving techniques and give drivers a hands-on opportunity to test their skills in vehicles equipped to handle the toughest winter conditions."
Jeep and Eagle products have an obvious tie-in with winter, with features such as the Eagle Vision's optional traction-control, anti-lock brakes and standard dual air bags and the Jeep Grand Cherokee's standard features such as four-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes that work in four- wheel drive and a driver's-side airbag, the only sport utility vehicle able to make that claim.
"Jeep-Eagle product features are tailor-made for winter driving," said L.W. Baker, general manager of the Jeep-Eagle Division. "But the vehicle is only part of the equation. A driver's ability and knowledge of a vehicle's attributes are equally important and the Winter Driving School addresses that."
The Weather Channel, co-sponsor of the tour, has been involved in educating the public in winter driving preparedness since the 24-hour cable network's launch in 1982.
"Weather plays such an important role in defining driving conditions, that The Weather Channel found sponsorship of this project a natural extension of its role in public education," said Belinda Sym- Smith, Education Services director for the network. "We hope the winter driving tour will encourage safe driving during the winter months and throughout the year."
Local affiliates of The Weather Channel will also participate at each stop on the tour.
The school also is sponsored by Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. Individuals, corporations, police or fire departments interested in attending the school in Steamboat Springs can call 303-879-6109.
