JEEP, PICKUP, MINIVAN SALES CONTINUE CHRYSLER STREAK

JEEP, PICKUP, MINIVAN SALES CONTINUE CHRYSLER STREAK
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation

(NYSE: C) started 1992 where it left off in 1991, with increased sales of Jeep vehicles and pickups as well as minivans while traditional car sales were off for the month of January which Chrysler attributed to an intentional reduction in program car sales -- nearly 20,000 less than last January.
Chrysler's sixth straight monthly truck increase came on sales of 65,401, a hefty 21.2-percent gain, best of the major manufacturers. That helped Chrysler increase its estimated share of the truck market by nearly two points to 21 percent. Car sales of 47,336 were down 23.6 percent.
Jeep sales increased 25 percent, helped by 13,015 Cherokee sales -- up 39 percent, and a 10-percent increase for Wrangler. Dodge Dakota pickup sales were up 51 percent on 8,054 sales and standard Ram pickup sales were up 4 percent. It was the best January ever for Wrangler and Dakota.
Dodge Caravan was the company's top selling vehicle with 15,457, an increase of 7 percent. Plymouth Voyager sales of 12,979 and Chrysler Town & Country sales of 717 accounted for a combined increase of 21 percent. It was the second best January performance for minivans. Standard Ram vans and wagons also were up significantly over last January.
Chrysler brand car sales were up 18 percent, as LeBaron convertible and sedan and New Yorker Salon all posted increases. Plymouth Sundance sales were up 35 percent and Dodge Shadow was up 8 percent.
