JCPENNEY PLANS THREE STORES IN MEXICO CITY

PLANO, Texas, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- JCPenney today announced plans to open three department stores in suburban Mexico City as part of new retail shopping centers to be developed by a joint venture of Frisa of Mexico City, Melvin Simon & Associates of Indianapolis, and Sid Uberman Co. of Fort Worth. The stores will be among the company's first in Mexico.
George K. Kapplinger, director JCPenney stores operations-Mexico, announced that the retail and catalog Company intends to open stores in the Metropol Shopping Center at Periferico Freeway and Avenue Juarez in the northwestern sector of Mexico City, Metrodom Shopping Center at Via Magna and Boulevard Magnocentro in the Lomas Magnacentro area, and Metrosur Shopping Center on Periferico Freeway, between Boulevard Picacho Ajusco and Avenue Luis Cabrera in the southwestern Pedregal area.
JCPenney, which operates 1,265 stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, intends to incorporate its traditional strengths of fashion, quality and value into its Mexico City stores. The company, which has its home office in Plano, had retail and catalog sales of more than $17 billion in 1992, its 90th anniversary year.
In announcing his company's plans, Mr. Kapplinger commented, "JCPenney relishes this opportunity to serve our Mexican neighbors. The strengthening cultural and economic ties between the U. S. and Mexico are a more-than-symbolic backdrop for this new outreach to a whole nation of consumers. We will bring with us to Mexico a 90-year-old tradition of listening to consumers and responding to the real needs of people and families wherever they live."
Kapplinger said that the design of the three stores will incorporate innovations in merchandising segmentation and presentation, placing them on the leading edge of JCPenney's store-planning evolution.
Extensive space will be devoted to large collections of women's and men's fashion apparel and accessories, featuring JCPenney exclusive designs as well as some of the most popular fashion labels, the JCPenney executive explained.
The fashion character of the stores will be carried into other departments, including cosmetics, jewelry, children's apparel, and women's, men's, and children's shoes. Home lines will include window coverings, bath furnishings, bedding, and decorative accessories.
Other departments will be luggage, athletic shoes, and active sports apparel. A catalog department is planned to supplement and expand the store's merchandise offerings.
Each of the Mexico City stores will have three merchandise levels opening onto three-level malls. The Metropol store will have a total area of 185,000 square feet, while the Metrodom and Pedregal stores each will have 165,000 square feet of space. Details for the new operations have not yet been formulated, said Kapplinger, noting that the company's plans are contingent upon final completion of real estate documentation in the near future.
Kapplinger said JCPenney's plans for Mexico City furthers his company's commitment to seek new opportunities to serve consumers. The company initially plans to open five stores in Mexico. In addition to the three stores in the nation's capital, stores are also planned for Guadalajara and Monterrey.
