JCPENNEY NAMES McCARTHY TO HEAD CATALOG, DAVIS TO HEAD NORTHWEST REGION,
 GISPANSKI TO CONTROLLER'S POST
 DALLAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- William E. McCarthy has been elected a divisional president and named president of the catalog division of J.C. Penney Company, Inc., effective Feb. 1, 1992. In this position, he succeeds Rodney M. Birkins, who is retiring after a 34 year career with the company.
 Succeeding McCarthy as president of the northwestern region is Gary L. Davis, who has served as director of coordination for JCPenney stores since 1990.
 Also effective Feb. 1, Leo A. Gispanski will move up to the post of controller, succeeding Robert O. Amick who is retiring after 33 years with JCPenney. Gispanski has been elected a vice president.
 The three officer appointments were announced today (Jan. 8) following the company's board of directors meeting by Chairman of the Board William R. Howell.
 McCarthy joined JCPenney in 1961 as a store trainee in Macon, Ga. He subsequently served as a store manager, district manager, and regional sales and merchandise manager. He was elected a divisional vice president in the women's merchandise area in 1988 prior to assuming the presidency of the northwestern region in 1991.
 Davis started as a store trainee in 1964 in Marietta, Ohio. He served as a store manager and then district manager prior to being named assistant director of corporate personnel in 1984.
 Three years later, he became director of geographic markets. He assumed his most recent position in 1990.
 Gispanski joined JCPenney in 1964, starting as a senior supervisor in the Pittsburgh accounting office. He was made assistant manager of this office in 1968 and assumed the same position in the Salt Lake City accounting office in 1969. He was named accounting centers operations manager in 1976 and elected assistant controller in 1982, at which time he also became manager of accounting operations and risk management, his most recent position.
 In making the announcements, Howell acknowledged the many contributions of Birkins and Amick during their extensive careers with JCPenney. He extended his and the company's best wishes for happy, healthy retirements to both gentlemen and their families.
