JCAHO to allow Ph.D. lab directors.

JCAHO to allow Ph.D. lab directors

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations will change its standards on directorship of hospital labs, bringing them more in line with CAP and Federal requirements.

Effective Jan. 1, clinical laboratories in accredited acute care facilities may be directed by either a qualified physician or a qualified doctoral scientist. Existing standards accept only physicians.

Certain restrictions will still apply, however. Anatomic pathology services must continue to be directed by a pathologist, and blood transfusion services by a pathologist or another qualified physician.

Further, doctoral science lab directors may not provide clinical consultation, a decision JCAHO made in deference to pathologists' concerns over the quality of patient care. When clinical consultation is expected, the lab director must be a physician, preferably a pathologist.

Laboratory groups have generally applauded the changes, which analysts say will give hospitals greater flexibility in matching lab directorship with personnel availability, administrative needs, and service complexity.
