JBoss, Inc. Brings Professional Open Source to Tomcat/Apache Integration.
JBoss(R), Inc., the Professional Open Source company, today announced it will begin providing new development and professional support for integration between Tomcat and Apache Web Server--a popular combination deployed with the JBoss Application Server by JBoss enterprise customers. In this effort to ease the complexity of integration between web servers and application servers, JBoss has hired as a full-time developer Mladen Turk, lead developer of mod_jk and committer to Apache Jakarta projects. With his valuable background, Turk will work closely with the Tomcat development team at JBoss, led by Tomcat lead developer Remy Maucherat, to improve integration of the Tomcat servlet engine and the Apache httpd web server.
In addition, JBoss announced new standalone Tomcat support pricing for customers needing only a JSP/servlet engine. Existing JBoss Application Server support customers will now receive support for Tomcat/Apache Web Server integration at no additional charge. The move to provide this critical integration is in response to emerging customer needs for support of a complete middleware system. With more and more companies making the JBoss platform a centerpiece of their IT environment, the seamless integration between the web server and application server is increasingly critical for production users.
"JBoss is focused on serving and responding to the needs of our customers," said Marc Fleury, chairman and CEO, JBoss, Inc. "The JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS) is designed to be mixed and matched with a wide variety of open source software. As the Professional Open Source company, JBoss will ensure that whatever technology combination our customers choose to deploy is optimized on all JBoss open source middleware, making it a safe choice for their enterprise."
The IntercontinentalExchange(R), which operates global OTC marketplaces for the trading of commodities on its Internet-based Interchange trading platform, represents one of roughly 95 percent of the JBoss customer base using Tomcat and Apache Web Server with the JBoss Application Server. According to Edwin Marcial, chief technology officer, "The combination of JBoss, Tomcat and Apache provides the IntercontinentalExchange with a powerful open source solution. Improved Tomcat/Apache integration will reduce development time, while simplifying our support options through JBoss."
"HP works closely with JBoss, and we feel this announcement signifies an important step towards addressing customer needs around a more tightly integrated, better supported open source middleware stack," said Efrain Rovira, worldwide director of Linux Marketing at HP. "The increased development and support for Tomcat and Apache will complement HP Linux Reference Architectures, which provide customers the flexibility and cost savings of open source technology on HP's industry-standard platforms with value-added offerings like HP OpenView software and HP's world-class service and support."
With the addition of Turk, JBoss is assembling some of the best open source talent in the industry. Turk will combine efforts with fellow JBoss developers to deliver customers with unparalleled advancements in ease-of-use, manageability and performance in this important integration point. Additionally, with the core developers, and in many cases the founder, standing behind JBoss' federation of open source projects, customers are assured of knowledgeable, responsive and high-quality support. Turk is based in Zagreb, Croatia and will report to Sacha Labourey, general manager, JBoss Europe. For more information about mod_jk and Tomcat, please visit http://www.jboss.com/products/index.
