JARI'S N. BRAZIL PULP MILL TO REPLACE CHLORINE WITH UCIG'S OXYGEN SYSTEM

JARI'S N. BRAZIL PULP MILL TO REPLACE CHLORINE WITH UCIG'S OXYGEN SYSTEM
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- One of Brazil's largest pulp and paper manufacturers will reduce its use and emissions of chlorine-based chemicals by more than 50 percent and save $2 million (US) in annual production costs with a new, on-site oxygen plant from S.A. White Martins, a regional company of Union Carbide Industrial Gases Inc. (UCIG).
Companhia do JARI's subsidiary, Cia. Florestal Monte Dourado, has awarded White Martins a 10-year contract to install and operate a 30 tons-per-day Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) gaseous oxygen production plant at its pulp mill in the Northern Region of Brazil on the edge of the Amazon Forest. White Martins' OxyGEN plant - the first of its kind in Brazil - features the use of a patented, advanced- technology molecular sieve absorbent. Start-up is planned for 1993.
"The value to JARI of our VPSA plant extends beyond a dependable, on-site supply of high quality oxygen," observes White Martins president Felix de Bulhoes. "We're also helping the company to enhance the effectiveness of its environmental protection programs in the Amazon Forest, lower its supply costs, and strengthen its position in the marketplace."
White Martins' VPSA oxygen plant will enable JARI to eliminate the use of chlorine in its hardwood pulp delignification process (removing the lignin - or nature's "glue" - that binds wood fibers together), and reduce substantially its dependency on chlorine in the softwood pulp bleaching process. The Monte Dourado mill produces 300,000 tons a year - 45 percent hardwood, 55 percent softwood - from genetically improved eucaliptus and pinus caribea trees. Its output represents 15 percent of all wood pulp produced in Brazil, with 270,000 tons exported annually to the U.S., Europe and Asia.
The Monte Dourado mill fulfills its entire annual production requirements by harvesting a 200,000-acre tree farm, which occupies five percent of the company's total acreage. The remaining 3.9 million acres are preserved in their natural state by the company's environmental engineers and naturalists, and in cooperation with Brazil's Federal Environmental Protection Department.
UCIG's advanced VPSA technology - first introduced in 1989 - is under contract at 30 worldwide locations, including seven pulp and paper manufacturers, to supply over 1,400 tons-per-day of gaseous oxygen. UCIG, including S.A. White Martins, is the largest industrial gas company in North and South America and one of the three largest in the world, with 1991 consolidated sales of $2.5 billion.
