JAPANESE CHAMPION OF OPEN COMMUNICATIONS AND AMERICAN MANAGEMENT CHOSEN TO LEAD MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC AMERICA COMPANIES

CYPRESS, Calif., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Takashi (Tachi) Kiuchi was today named chairman of the Mitsubishi Electric America group of companies (MEA) which employ 4,000 nationwide. He accepts this post in addition to maintaining his role as chairman and chief executive officer of MEA's largest subsidiary, Mitsubishi Electronics America. In addition, Kiuchi was appointed the first overseas director to the board of parent company Mitsubishi Electric Corp.
As a result of both posts, Kiuchi will have direct input into the most important strategic policy decisions impacting the future of Mitsubishi Electric companies worldwide. In the United States, Kiuchi anticipates MEA revenues will double, growing to $5 billion in the next few years. Whether it be advanced television, smart elevators or custom semiconductors, the Mitsubishi Electric America companies are a success.
"It's clear to me that we can't stay ahead without putting as much into developing our people as we do our products," says Kiuchi. Eventually he would like to see MEA companies run by Americans. Most recently, he hired international businessman Jack Osborn to head Mitsubishi Electronics' Consumer Electronics Group, well known for its big screen televisions and Diamond Vision stadium display screens.
With Kiuchi at the helm, MEA companies are poised to take a leadership role in developing the vast information, communication and transportation highways of the future. Kiuchi's business philosophy of creating positive communications among Americans and Japanese has led to his own and his company's success. Kiuchi's credo: Be sensitive to one another, think like true partners, and get involved on a personal level.
According to Mitsubishi Electric Corp. president, Takashi Kitaoka, "Kiuchi has done an outstanding job of building a positive, well- established reputation for Mitsubishi Electronics in the U.S. His international communications approach is in tune with Mitsubishi Electric's commitment to becoming a multinational corporation."
While many companies with Japanese parents are cutting costs by replacing Americans with Japanese, Kiuchi is doing the reverse. He is convinced that Americans have a level of understanding about the U.S. market that foreigners simply cannot possess. Under his leadership at Mitsubishi Electronics, Americans were named president to three of seven key business groups.
"Given that the relationship between Americans and Japanese is little more than a human lifetime old, I think we're doing okay. But we need to focus on building personal relationships and understanding in order to progress as global partners," says Kiuchi.
Mitsubishi Electric is a world leader in the electronics business, and its U.S. operations include research and development, engineering, manufacturing as well as sales and marketing for a broad range of industrial, commercial and consumer electronics products.
The Mitsubishi Electric America companies include Mitsubishi Electronics America, Mitsubishi Consumer Electronics America, Mitsubishi Semiconductor America, Mitsubishi Electric Manufacturing Cincinnati, Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Mitsubishi Electric Industrial Controls, Horizon Research, Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories and Astronet Corp. MEA is in Cypress.
