JAPANESE AGENCY PURCHASES TRIMBLE GPS SURVEY EQUIPMENT FOR USE IN EARTHQUAKE PREDICTION

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced today that Japan's Geodetic Survey Institute (GSI) purchased 60 of the company's 4000 SSE/RC Geodetic Surveyor(TM) receivers, as part of the world's most ambitious effort to predict earthquakes. Included in the multi-million dollar sale was an automated GPS processing and data management system. GSI purchased the Trimble Geodetic receivers and software through Hitachi Zosen Information Systems of Japan, who also supplied the data management system, modems, engineering work stations, and is constructing the remote GPS facilities.
According to Dr. Jose Briceno, managing director of Trimble Japan K.K., "Our ability to provide strong service and technical support was a critical factor in our gaining this contract. During GSI's evaluation test, our receivers out-performed the latest technology offered by all other manufacturers of GPS geodetic receivers. We take great pride in winning this contract and look forward to expanding our presence in Japan."
GSI will place the equipment near fault lines, where colliding tectonic plates strain against one another. The Trimble Geodetic receivers process signals from Global Positioning system satellites to determine millimeter-level movements. They will sit on both sides of the fault lines and measure the movement of each tectonic plate. Hitachi Zosen modems will transmit this data to engineering work stations running Trimble's WAVE processing software. At the workstations GSI personnel will use the software to process the data and plot movement trends over time -- trends that will reveal the amount of stress along the fault lines. Armed with this information, the GSI scientists will research the prediction of earthquakes.
