JAPAN AIRLINES GIVES BACK TO COMMUNITY VIA GOLF TOURNAMENT
NEW YORK, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- When the JAL Big Apple Classic comes to New Rochelle this July 13 through 19, the local area will reap many benefits. Many golf enthusiasts do not realize that one of the main reasons title sponsor Japan Airlines supports the tournament is to give an extra boost to the local community.
Japan Airlines (JAL) has sponsored the JAL Big Apple Classic, the only LPGA tournament in the New York metro region, since 1990. Over the past two years, JAL has worked with the March of Dimes and New Rochelle Hospital Medical Center. This year, Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center is the main charity of the tournament. The New Rochelle Hospital Medical Center and March of Dimes are participating charities.
Japan Airlines works with local volunteers to raise funds. Seventy-five percent of the revenue from every ticket sold by the hospital before the tournament goes back to the medical center. JAL matches the other 25 percent of the ticket price, giving the hospital a 100 percent return on the tickets it sells. Japan Airlines also hosts a pre-tournament gala for the March of Dimes at the Waldorf- Astoria, raising more funds through table sales and sponsorship ads.
The JAL Big Apple Classic is held at the Wykagyl Club in New Rochelle. The tournament attracted tens of thousands of spectators over the past two years. This year the tournament features such famous women golfers as Betsy King, Nancy Lopez, Ayako Okamoto, Pat Bradley, Beth Daniel and Danielle Ammaccapane. Betsy King has won the past two JAL Big Apple Classics and will be shooting for her third consecutive title, a rare and difficult accomplishment in the world of sports.
