JAMES RIVER TO CLOSE MODESTO, CALIFORNIA, FOLDING CARTON PLANT

RICHMOND, Va., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- James River Corporation's Food and Consumer Packaging Business has announced that it will discontinue its folding carton operation in Modesto, California, transferring this business to other James River folding carton facilities. Customers of the Modesto plant will be serviced without interruption. This consolidation is part of James River's company-wide restructuring program targeted to reduce annual operating costs by $200 million, announced at the end of 1992. The Modesto facility manufactures paperboard packages for the consumer goods industry and is one of the company's fourteen folding carton operations located throughout the United States. There will be 235 salaried and hourly employees affected. The closure of Modesto will allow James River to strengthen its service, increase cost competitiveness, and redistribute equipment in the most efficient manner to better service its customers and markets in the coming years. This action will allow the Folding Carton Group to focus its national manufacturing resources to the best advantage of its customers, and to further strengthen its operations in the Western region, where it will remain one of the largest folding carton manufacturers with plants in Garden Grove, California; Portland, Oregon; and Redmond, Washington.
