JAMES RIVER SIGNS "FRESH LOOK" AGREEMENT WITH MCI

RYE BROOK, N.Y., July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) announced today that James River Corporation (NYSE: JR), a $4.7 billion marketer and manufacturer of consumer products, food and consumer packaging and communications papers, has selected MCI as its exclusive telecommunications provider under a new three-year contract. This switch in telecommunications provider was made possible by the recent FCC 800 Portability order termed, "Fresh Look."
"By taking advantage of the `Fresh Look' opportunity, the company will substantially reduce its telecommunications costs," said Steve Hare, James River's senior vice president and chief financial officer. "At the same time, our alliance with MCI provides James River with both state-of-the-art technology and more efficient services."
According to the terms of the agreement, James River is transferring all of its 800 business from its previous carrier to MCI. "Thousands of businesses are taking advantage of the 800 Portability opportunity to select MCI," said Jonathan Crane, president of MCI National Accounts, "and are getting the best combination of quality, flexibility, technology and price."
MCI will also provide James River a wide range of advanced voice and data services, including three relatively new MCI services -- Vnet Cellular, VideoNet and the Corporate TeleCard. Vnet, MCI's virtual private network service, will link more than 140 James River locations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. In addition, Vnet Cellular service extends the volume cost savings to the James River's cellular users -- primarily its sales force -- by providing them access to the company's Vnet network.
James River has also contracted for VideoNet, a new multi-point dial-up videoconferencing service for domestic and international videoconferencing that is expected to reduce travel and meeting expenses. The service is offered in cooperation with PictureTel, a leading provider of videoconferencing equipment.
James Rivers employees who are corporate American Express card holders will also use Corporate Telecard, which enables users to make long distance calls while traveling and be billed for those calls on their American Express Corporate Card statements. The Corporate Telecard makes the T&E reconciliation process more efficient while providing the applicable MCI rate, including all applicable discounts.
Headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, James River Corporation is a leading marketer and manufacturer of consumer products, food and consumer packaging, and communications paper. The company produces a number of branded products which include Quilted Northern(R) bathroom tissue; Brawny(R) paper towels; Vanity Fair(R) premium table napkins, plates and cups; Dixie(R) plates, cups and cutlery; Eureka! premium recycled printing and writing papers; Word Pro(R) copy papers; Quilt- Rap(TM) sandwich wrap; Crown(R) Rap Quick Serve packaging; and Pacesetter(TM) coated, recycled paperboard.

With 1992 revenue of $10.6 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries. MCI provides international calling from the U.S. to more than 250 countries and places.
