JAMES RIVER CORPORATION CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF NEW $120 MILLION RECYCLING FACILITY

KALAMAZOO, Mich., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- During a ceremony today, James River Corp. (NYSE: JR) honored the individuals and organizations involved in building its historic $120 million K-1 facility, which manufactures the company's new PaceSetter(TM) line of 100-percent- recycled paperboard products. The $120 million investment is the largest ever made in the U.S. coated recycled paperboard industry.
The K-1 facility is one of the largest of its kind in the world, measuring more than 600 feet in length with the capability to produce more than 600 tons of recycled paperboard per day. The full PaceSetter(TM) line will use more than 325,000 tons of recovered paper a year -- an average of more than 46 truckloads per day -- bringing the company-wide annual total to more than 800,000 tons.
"James River has more than 1,700 employees in the Kalamazoo community and we're very pleased to be holding this breakthrough celebration here," said Norm Ryan, executive vice president, food and consumer packaging. "The K-1 facility is a significant addition to our extensive operations in Kalamazoo.
"We also want to thank and acknowledge all the individuals and organizations that helped make this possible. The PaceSetter product line manufactured here represents a new generation of coated recycled paperboard that redefines the standard of excellence in the packaging and premium printing markets.
"Our decision to construct this facility was based on economic and environmental factors. There has been a significant increase in demand for coated recycled board which is due, in large part, to environmental concerns raised by our customers. PaceSetter offers extraordinary cleanliness, uniformity and printability across an expanded line of James River paperboard products."
James River Corporation, headquartered in Richmond, Va., is a marketer and manufacturer of consumer products, food and consumer packaging and communications papers. The PaceSetter(TM) product line joins a distinguished group of branded products including QWIK CRISP(R) microwave packaging, NORTHERN(R) bathroom tissue, BRAWNY(R) paper towels, DIXIE(R) cups and plates, WORD PRO(R) copy paper, and the new QUILT-RAP(TM) sandwich wrap. For the year which ended Dec. 27, 1992, the company had annual sales of approximately $4.7 billion.
