JAMES R. WATERSTON APPOINTED GROUP EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND
 CHIEF BANKING OFFICER AT KEYCORP
ALBANY, N.Y., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Victor J. Riley, Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY), has announced the appointment of James R. Waterston to the newly created position of group executive vice president and chief banking officer. Waterston will also be recommended for election to the KeyCorp board of directors.
In his new position, reporting directly to Riley, Waterston will be responsible for all banking subsidiaries' activities. According to Riley, "This new position contributes to the solid structure we have built to manage the KeyCorp enterprise as we go forward, now and for the future. Jim Waterston brings more than 20 years of valuable banking experience to KeyCorp. His expertise and management style will strengthen our management team."
Waterston most recently served as president of Comerica Bank and vice chairman of Comerica Incorporated. He began his career there (then Detroit Bank & Trust) in 1968 as a credit analyst. He held a number of positions of increasing responsibility including serving as executive in charge of the Corporate Banking Division and then the Consumer Financial Services Division. He was named president of the Detroit-based bank in January of 1990.
Prior to joining the bank, Waterston was on the audit staff of the Chicago office of Arthur Andersen & Co. He is a certified public accountant and received his master of business administration degree, with distinction, from the University of Michigan in 1964 and his bachelor of business administration from there the previous year.
Waterston has served on the boards of directors of several Detroit area community organizations including the United Way where he chairs the Capital Funds Division, St. John Hospital and Medical Center and the Metropolitan Center for High Technology where he recently completed three terms as chairman. He is also a member of the Dean's Visiting Committee at the University of Michigan's Graduate School of Business Administration. Recent involvements have included terms as chairman of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, president of the Detroit Club, and president of the board of trustees of the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church.
Active professionally, Waterston is also a member of the Association of Reserve City Bankers, Robert Morris Associates, Young Presidents' Organization and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He and his family will make their home in the Albany area.
