JAMES JOSEPH MAHONEY (KANSAS CITY, MO., JAN. 5, 1942 - BELVEDERE, CALIF., SEPT. 12, 1992)
TIBURON, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Prominent mergers and acquisition guru and pundit James J. Mahoney died on Sept. 12, at his home in Belvedere, after a valiant struggle with cancer, according to representatives of Tweed Publishing. Mr. Mahoney, 50, grew up in Beverly Hills, and was active in the Association for Corporate Growth, and was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club and the St. Francis Yacht Club.
Mr. Mahoney's weekly newsletter, The National Review of Corporate Acquisitions, which he founded in 1974, was judged to be the bible of the mergers and acquisitions industry. Providing concise analyses with commentary and forecasts, Mr. Mahoney brought his own unique combination of order and insight to an often drastically changing and complex market. He authored several books on corporate acquisitions and was widely quoted in the financial page of national newspapers as the authoritative source on middle market activity.
Trained as a lawyer at UCLA and with his background of teaching literature at University of Wisconsin, Mr. Mahoney was a second generation player in the acquisitions field; his father James William Mahoney created the family business, Mahoney and Co., of which Mr. Mahoney was president. The family plans to carry on the tradition in The National Review and with Tweed Publishing.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Belvedere.
Mr. Mahoney is survived by his wife Sonja, his daughter Jennifer, his mother Mrs. James (Estelle) Mahoney of Beverly Hills and his sister Jean Robinson of Newport Beach.
