JAMES G. MITCHELL NAMED PRESIDENT OF STEELCASE CANADA LTD.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- James G. Mitchell has been named president of Steelcase Canada Ltd., a leading designer and manufacturer of office furniture. Mitchell will assume his new position Nov. 1, 1993, according to an announcement made today by Robert C. Pew III, president of Steelcase North America.
"Jim Mitchell brings to Steelcase Canada an optimal blend of Canadian marketing expertise and notable management ability," said Pew. "His vision encompasses our commitment to the Canadian market at a time when both innovation and productivity are particularly important.
"Developments such as the North American Free Trade Agreement," added Pew, "are encouraging industries such as ours to reevaluate traditional markets -- and to focus with new energy on the global marketplace." Steelcase Canada, he said, has a prime opportunity not only to expand into new and growing Canadian markets -- but also to meet the changing office furniture needs of customers worldwide.
Mitchell has successfully directed marketing, management and manufacturing operations for several major corporations in Canada, including Miles Laboratories and Gaines Pet Foods. Most recently, he served as group vice president and general manager, North American Operations, for Tambrands Inc., where in 1992, he exceeded previous year operating profits by more than 20 percent.
Mitchell was born in Brantford, Ontario, and received his bachelor of business administration degree from Ryerson University, Toronto.
The 720,000-square-foot Markham, Ontario-based manufacturing facility is responsible for the exclusive production of a number of Steelcase products distributed throughout North America, in addition to the products it manufactures for the Canadian market.
Steelcase Canada Ltd. ranks first in the Canadian office furniture industry in range of products offered. They are distributed domestically and for export through a Canada-wide network of independent dealers.
Steelcase Canada has been providing office furnishings and services to Canadian businesses and governments for nearly 40 years. The company employs 550 people at the Markham manufacturing facility and 50 additional people at sales offices and showrooms in Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Toronto.
Steelcase, Inc., the world's leading designer and manufacturer of office furniture, is headquartered in Grand Rapids, with operations throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
