JAMES FLEMING, PH.D., OF EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, TO RECEIVE GLENN FELLOW AWARD

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Glenn Foundation For Medical Research has announced the selection of James Fleming, Ph.D., Eastern Washington University (EWU), to receive the $50,000 Glenn Fellow Award for research in the biology of aging.
Fleming will utilize the unrestricted award to continue research on the role of mitochondria in aging with the goal of designing interventions to prevent or reverse oxidative damage in mitochondria.
Mitochondria exist within living cells and serve as the energy sources of most of the cell's functions. According to Fleming's theory, aging is a kind of energy deficiency disease caused by oxygen radical damage to the mitochondria of certain cell types.
Fleming, 46, is also a senior research scientist at the Institute of Molecular Medical Sciences in Palo Alto, Calif., where he directs the Laboratory for Aging Research. He began research projects at EWU last year under a grant from the Northwest Institute for Advanced Study.
Fleming's interest in the aging process began in the late 1970s when he was a research associate in space flight physiology studying the aging of red blood cells at NASA's Ames Research Center in California. He later accepted a position at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine, where he developed the Laboratory for Research on Aging. In 1992, he moved to the new Institute of Molecular Medical Sciences in Palo Alto.
"Research on aging is at an important stage right now," said Fleming. "It is possible, with fruit flies, to identify the genes responsible for long life and find a way to intervene in the basic aging process."
