JAMES AND THIELE NOMINATED TO THE ST. PAUL COMPANIES BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 ST. PAUL, Minn., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Ron James and Patrick Thiele have been nominated to The St. Paul Companies (NYSE: SPC) board of directors and will stand for election at the company's annual meeting on May 4.
 James, 42, is vice president and chief executive officer-Minnesota of US WEST Communications, Minneapolis, where he is responsible for integrating the marketing, operations, legislative and regulatory strategies for the telephone and telecommunications company. He has worked for US WEST (formerly Northwestern Bell Telephone Company) since 1971.
 James is a member of the board of directors for the Ceridian Corporation, the Great Hall Investment Funds and the United Way of Minneapolis, president of the board of directors of the Guthrie Theater, and co-chair of the governor's Action for Children Commission. He also serves on several other nonprofit, community and governmental boards and commissions.
 Thiele, 42, is executive vice president and chief financial officer of The St. Paul Companies. He first joined The St. Paul as an investment officer in 1978 and held several positions until being named executive vice president in 1989 and chief financial officer in 1991.
 Thiele serves on the boards of The John Nuveen Company, Hook-SupeRx, Inc., the Wenger Corporation, the College of Saint Catherine and the Guthrie Theater.
