JAMA CORRECTS 'MISSTATEMENTS' BY MVMA IN HONDA OUSTER

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association issued the following:
The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) expressed dismay at the mischaracterization of JAMA by the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association (MVMA) in their attempt last week to justify the expulsion of Honda of America Manufacturing and other foreign-owned domestic manufacturers from its membership. MVMA stated that "membership in JAMA is not accessible to domestic MVMA members."
According to William Duncan, general director of JAMA's Washington office, this statement by MVMA is simply wrong. "JAMA, as its name indicates, is a national trade association of motor vehicle producers located in Japan. Accordingly, JAMA's membership is and would be open to any manufacturer of motor vehicles producing in Japan," he said.
In fact, by limiting its membership only to Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, MVMA runs counter to trade association membership practices in the United States, Japan and Europe.
It is common in all vehicle producing countries for manufacturers of both vehicles and parts to join the respective trade associations of the countries where they produce. Nissan U.K., for example, is a member of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in the U.K. Both General Motors of Europe and Ford Europe belong to the German Automobile Manufacturers Association (VDA). The Big Three each have capital ownership in vehicle producers in Japan, all of whom are members of JAMA.
The Japan Auto Parts Industry Association includes in its membership U.S. automotive suppliers which produce auto parts in Japan. Conversely Japanese-owned parts producers in the United States are members of U.S. auto parts trade associations.
According to Duncan JAMA regrets that MVMA in its "restructuring" to become exclusionary has attempted to justify their decision by distorting the character and membership practices of JAMA.
