JAL, Air Tahiti Nui to jointly operate Narita-Papeete line.

TOKYO, Jan. 19 Kyodo

Japan Airlines Co. (JAL) and Air Tahiti Nui Inc. will jointly operate flights connecting Japan and Tahiti under a code-sharing method beginning April 20, pending approval by aviation authorities, JAL said Monday.

The two airlines will operate three round-trip flights a week between Narita and Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, and will utilize Air Tahiti Nui's A340 aircraft, each of which seats 294 passengers, JAL said.

Air Tahiti Nui is the 22nd foreign airline to form a business tie-up with JAL, the largest Japanese airline and a unit of Japan Airlines System Corp.

The two airlines will also jointly promote Tahiti in Japan, JAL said.

Air Tahiti Nui was founded in 1996 as the first international airline based in the French territory. The French Polynesian government is a major shareholder in the airline along with private Tahitian investors.

JAL and Japan Air System Co. (JAS), a unit of Japan Airlines System, are scheduled to reorganize their operations into Japan Airlines International Co. and Japan Airlines Domestic Co. on April 1.
