JAILED FOR LIFE..THE BUTCHER OF RWANDA; Bagosora's militia killed 800,000.
THE man behind the genocide of over 800,000 Rwandans was jailed for life yesterday.
The one ste Bagosora, 67, led a committee of extremists who plotted the mass deaths 14 years ago. As Rwanda's defence boss, he then ordered Hutu soldiers to go on the 100-day massacre.
Goaded by hate messages from the Hutu government in 1994, militia and Rwandans went from village to village slaughtering men, women and children. Hundreds of thousands of ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were butchered.
Bagosora was also behind the deaths of former prime minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana and 10 Belgian peacekeepers.
General Romeo Dallaire, head of UN peacekeepers at the time, described Mr Bagosora as the "kingpin behind the genocide".
Yesterday, a UN tribunal sitting in Tanzania found him guilty of instigating the genocide.
Jean Paul Rurangwa, 32, who lost his father and two sisters, said: "The fact he was sentenced to the biggest punishment the court can give is a relief."
Ex-commanders Anatole Nsegiyumva and Alloys Ntabakuze also got life in jail yesterday after being found guilty of genocide.
The tribunal has so far convicted 34 people. Bagosora is set to appeal against the verdict.
