JAGUAR TWO-STROKE ENGINE TO BE DEVELOPED BY ORBITAL

JAGUAR TWO-STROKE ENGINE TO BE DEVELOPED BY ORBITAL
 /ADVANCE/PERTH, Western Australia, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Engineers

at Jaguar have unveiled a prototype two-stroke engine which could power a new generation of fuel efficient, low emission, high performance luxury cars.
The compact and lightweight V-6 engine is the culmination of a 4 1/2-year research programme by a group of engineers at Jaguar's engine research and development centre at Whitley in Coventry, working in conjunction with the Orbital Engine Corporation of Australia and Queens University, Belfast.
The next phase of the development will be a full scale joint development programme with Orbital -- world leaders in fuel injection and emission control technology for two-stroke engines.
Jaguar's Group Chief Engineer - Engines and Transmissions, Mr. Trevor Crisp, announced the joint project with Orbital today saying: "Our objective now is to produce a 350 brake horsepower demonstrator engine within the next two years."
Developing Jaguar's two-stroke engine has been the responsibility of Mr. Ron Lee, Jaguar's manager of engine development. "Large displacement two-stroke engines could offer major benefits to luxury car manufacturers," said Mr. Lee.
"They are environmentally friendly, fuel efficient and significantly lighter than the current generation of large car engines. At the same time they have the refinement and performance potential which will always be a hallmark of Jaguar and Daimler cars."
Mr. Lee said the 3.2 litre V-6 two-stroke engine Jaguar have built is 40 percent lighter than a comparable 12 cylinder engine -- yet capable of producing the equivalent power output.
"Our research work over the past 4 1/2 years has included performance testing of a three cylinder development engine which demonstrated excellent torque, fuel economy and combustion stability," he said. "This culminated in the production of a V-6 unit and we will now be working with Orbital to realise this engine's potential."
Orbital's Director of Engineering, Mr. Kim Schlunke, said the Jaguar programme would give Orbital the opportunity to apply its leading edge technology to a large size engine designed to power one of the world's most prestigious luxury cars. "It is a very exciting project," he said.
Mr. Schlunke said Orbital was committed to developing technology for a high horsepower engine as one of several advanced technology programmes that are part of Orbital's recent $10 million expansion.
The expansion programme, boosted by a $4 million loan facility from the Western Australian Government, will not only facilitate the Jaguar project but will also assist Orbital's 300-strong workforce in the commercialisation and completion of other key technical programmes.
The planned cooperation between Jaguar and Orbital was warmly welcomed by Western Australia's Premier Dr. Carmen Lawrence, who said she was delighted that a prestigious automotive company like Jaguar should find it advantageous to select a Western Australian company for such a programme.
Orbital's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ralph Sarich, said the Western Australian Government's support over many years had helped create an engineering business of world renown to complement the company's technology development and licensing business.
