JAGUAR E-TYPE - A CAR TO BE PROUD OF.
THE iconic Jaguar E-type has been listed as a key historic objects to be proud of in the Midlands.
In a national project the BBC has teamed up with the British Museum to create A History of the World to identify and celebrate historic objects that have helped define our history and our future.
Museums across the country were asked to help choose more than 600 exhibits that they regard as iconic and the Jaguar E-type was chosen for the Coventry and Warwickshire region.
The panel, consisting of museum and BBC staff, listed historical items to be proud of. They not only reflect the history of Coventry and Warwickshire, but also highlight objects that have helped define the modern world. The Jaguar E-type, while an icon in its own right, has also helped shape the design of Jaguar's current range of cars.
Giles Taylor, chief designer for the XK explained: "While the design of the current XK is not directly influenced by the E-type, we are guided by the same design values today that created this car and some of the most iconic Jaguars over the years.
"With the XK, our design approach enabled us to create a modern interpretation of the E-type's innate sense of artistry - the wonderful sleek form with clean surfaces and beauty of line, elements that define the very essence of a sporting Jaguar.
"At the time, the E-type was bold, impactful and very modern and you can say exactly the same about our current range of cars - the XK, XF and new XJ." Meanwhile the Jaguar XF has added yet another award to its long list of accolades, taking the Best Executive Car at the Fleet News awards.
Its win was all the sweeter as it beat competition which included the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
PRIDE OF PLACE AMONG the objects to be proud of listed from Birmingham are: A section of first successful communications cable laid across the Atlantic ocean, connecting Europe with America; William Murdock's steam locomotive; a pattern penny made at the Soho Minit in Handsworth; a steam engine clock barometer; a copper statue of the standing Buddha from Sultanganj, North India.
Defining design: Jaguar's E-type was a bold step forward in automotive achievement.
