JACOBS RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE AWARD PASADENA, Calif., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second
consecutive year, a construction subsidiary of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) received the prestigious Business Roundtable's Construction Safety Award, recognizing "commendable safety performance" in the construction industry, it was announced today.
The award was presented Nov. 19 by the Business Roundtable at its fourth annual Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) Awards ceremony in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Noel G. Watson, Jacobs' president and chief operating officer, accepted the award for the company. Several awards are presented by the Business Roundtable for different classes and categories of construction firms. Jacobs' union construction subsidiary, Jacobs Constructors Inc., was selected this year as the leader in the heavy construction industry category. Another of Jacobs' subsidiaries, JE Merit Constructors Inc. was honored in the same category at last year's CISE Awards presentation. "Our two awards in as many years are proof that Jacobs is a recognized leader in the vital effort to keep the workplace safe," Watson said. "This latest award is a gratifying recognition of the commitment the management and employees of our company have made to the highest standards of safety. Good safety practices not only reduce injury and trauma to personnel, but also increase productivity," Watson added. According to John McLachlan, Jacobs' senior vice president in charge of quality and safety, Jacobs utilizes a quality-driven, pro- active safety management concept which focuses on the total safety commitment of all employees. Jacobs' endeavor toward safety excellence has led to the company's success in recent years. This excellence has also lowered its OSHA recordable injury rates to less than one-third the national average, and its lost-time injury rate to less than one-12th the national average. During the past five years, Jacobs' safety performance has been recognized by national and state safety organizations, including the National Safety Council, as well as clients and member organizations such as the Army Corps of Engineers, Associated Builders and Contractors, and the Association of General Contractors, McLachlan added. At the awards ceremony, Cris E. Campos, chairman of the Business Rountable's Construction Committee Safety Awards Task Force, presented plaques to Jacobs and other winners of the Constructor Safety Award. Commenting on the group of honorees, Campos said, "These excellent examples of what can be done are part of a crucial message that the construction industry must not ignore. We must apply the quality process to construction safety, and strive relentlessly for continuous improvement and zero workplace accidents ... It takes a commitment by all of us at the worksite. "Just as the quality process meets customer expectations, the safety process must meet employee safety expectations, control increasing workers' compensation costs and increase productivity," he added. "Everybody -- owners, contractors and employees -- must be involved. We can settle for nothing less." The Business Roundtable, an association of chief executive officers of 200 major corporations that focus and act on public issues, sponsors the annual CISE Awards to recognize outstanding programs that improve safety in the construction industry.
