JACK DANIEL DISTILLERY IN SEARCH OF VOLUNTEERS TO JUDGE BARBECUE CHAMPIONSHIP

LYNCHBURG, Tenn., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Jack Daniel Distillery is in search of a few volunteers to sample and judge...some of the tastiest, tangiest barbecue from around the country.
The Fifth Annual Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational Barbecue is Oct. 23, and the distillery is looking for 15 backyard barbecuers to help judge the famous 'cue competition.
For this year's event, more than 30 championship barbecue teams will meet in Lynchburg (pop. 361), Tenn., home of the Jack Daniel Distillery, to slowcook their way toward $13,000 in prize money. In addition to the 15 backyard barbecuers, teams will be judged by 15 celebrities.
"The annual call for amateur judges, or backyard barbecuers, is about as competitive as the event itself," said Frank 'Frog' Bobo, pitmaster of ceremonies and retired master distiller at Jack Daniel.
"We just ask for a note in the mail with qualifications. Most are humorous, but some folks take it pretty seriously. We get letters from across the country. Lifelong Jack Daniel fans want to come down to Lynchburg to live the small town life for a weekend."
Those folks usually have to plan another trip to Lynchburg for a true glimpse of small town life, however. Last year's barbecue brought more than 20,000 people to the 361-citizen town. But they still enjoyed homemade fried pies, toe-tappin' country music, the country dog contest and of course, great barbecue.
The distillery will choose amateur judges in September. Anyone who is interested should send a note explaining why they should be selected to: Frog Bobo, The Jack Daniel Distillery, Lynchburg, TN 37352. Notes should be sent before Sept. 1, and should include full name, address and phone number.
"And just like in years past," said Bobo, "folks should come even if they're not chosen to judge. We'll have all sorts of activities for this year's hometown festival -- from pig races to the rolling pin toss."
