J.D. POWER CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AWARD PRESENTED TO MICHELIN AT NAIAS

 DETROIT, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Michelin today received the J.D. Power award for customer satisfaction at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit's Cobo Hall.
 The award was presented by David Power, president and founder of J.D. Power and Associates, to Michelin North America's chairman and CEO, Carlos Ghosn.
 Michelin has again been ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction among all tire brands fitted as original equipment, according to the results of the fifth annual J.D. Power and Associates study which asked buyers of 1992 vehicles to evaluate their OE tires according to product quality and performance.
 The BFGoodrich brand, which is owned by Michelin, was ranked third among the 12 brands that are featured in the study and used as original equipment.
 This is the second time in the past year that Michelin has been ranked highest in a J.D. Power and Associates consumer satisfaction study on the tire industry. In June 1993, the tire brand earned the top spot in the J.D. Power and Associates Replacement Tire Study.
 In commenting on the study, a company spokesperson said: "Michelin places the highest importance on product quality and customer satisfaction. To again have the J.D. Power and Associates study reconfirm the success of our efforts is very satisfying."

 "It is especially gratifying for Michelin to once again accept the J.D. Power Award because this award is distinguished from all others: It is the 'Voice of the Customer.' And it is a voice that we, like J.D. Power and Associates, take very seriously.
 "This accolade reconfirms Michelin's position as No. 1 choice of car and light truck owners for original equipment tires. In '93, car owners voted us the best brand for replacement tires as well.
 "At Michelin, there is no acceptance of any but the highest standards. And our success is continually confirmed by many other studies. Independent research, which measures consumer perceptions of quality, ranks Michelin in the top 20 of 166 brands in 50 product categories. In another survey, vehicle owners say that Michelin sets the standards for the industry.

Michelin's Radial XSE technology has shattered preconceived ideas of what is possible.  "The strength of Radial XSE technology has already been recognized by OE manufacturers. Michelin's new 'green tire' with Radial XSE has been selected by Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Honda. Soon these tires will be original equipment on domestic cars as well.
 "Servicing our customers often means pushing back the boundaries of technology. As I speak with you, Michelin engineers are working with car makers on many advanced projects -- experimental models they hope to produce in the future.
 "Projects, such as these, lead to innovations like our electric vehicle tire. In competition, it far surpassed the others and was selected as fitment for GM's Impact electric vehicle.
 "Other innovations created by Michelin include the 'continued mobility' systems which permit a tire to operate after a pressure loss, even down to zero pressure. Some of these systems were introduced to OE more than eight years ago. Now we're developing self-supporting tires for performance luxury sedans, while we work on solutions to meet the demands of other vehicles.

That remark was most recently made after we opened our newest plant in Clermont-Ferrand this past October, ushering in a totally new concept in manufacturing.
