J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES LAUNCHES AUTOMOTIVE COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEM WITH REYNOLDS AND REYNOLDS

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- J.D. Power and Associates announced the launch of "The Power Information Network," a new, open information system for automotive retailers designed to provide data much like the scanner system in the grocery industry, but via a different type of technology and on a much broader scale. This system, the first of its kind, will be the first to provide retailers with industry-wide information. The major product in the network is called "PowerView." PowerView is designed to work in conjunction with the dealer's existing computer system and data. It will gather automotive transaction data on a national basis, focus it on retailers' operating needs, and give dealers an accurate picture of their market and franchise. By integrating information about the market and their own operation, dealers will be able to make decisions that better satisfy the requirements of their customers. Pioneering the system with J.D. Power and Associates is Reynolds and Reynolds, who will provide the gateway to the dealers' operation via their current relationship with their customers. They will offer PowerView via their ERA system, one of the industry's most advanced dealer computer systems.
"Retailers currently know all that goes on in their dealership operation," commented J.D. Power III, president and founder of J.D. Power and Associates, "but they have no hard data that allows them to make informed decisions regarding vehicle ordering, pricing, financial planning, or even advertising."
PowerView is set up to help retailers improve profitability by giving them access to current market information. As an example of current needs, retailers face a major hurdle in developing on-target vehicle ordering strategies because they only know about their individual experience. PowerView will tell them about what consumers are really demanding. By eliminating experimentation, customers get exactly what they are looking for at a competitive price while dealers improve their profit position. PowerView will present information via a series of reports available to retailers on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
The PowerView operation, developed and owned by J.D. Power and Associates, will initially be available only to Reynolds and Reynolds dealers using the more sophisticated ERA system. The network via which all information will be transmitted is being handled by GE Information Systems. All three parties have worked together to pioneer this state-of-the-art information network.
"There is no doubt that information is power. To be successful," commented Power, "automobile dealers must overcome information isolation as they operate in an incredibly sophisticated industry. Dealers need access to strategic information from sources outside their dealership. PowerView will allow dealers to make informed decisions and business adjustments designed to give them a distinctive competitive edge and greater profitability. And consumers will ultimately benefit via pricing that is fair and vehicle inventories based on their requirements."
According to Jack Proud, Reynolds' senior vice president and general manager for Automotive Computer Systems, "We partnered with J.D. Power and Associates because of their reputation in the industry, the quality of their organization and the level of critical information that they capture and analyze. Over the years, Reynolds has been very aggressive in developing our ERA integrated computer solutions to provide automobile dealers with total information control. Our vision has been to empower our customers with immediate access to critical information to give them a greater competitive advantage. By adding PowerView, we're now able to extend information beyond the walls of the dealership."
A second product offering is also available via "The Power Information Network," PowerGram. It is a report which will be transmitted via the retailer's computer system offering them daily, industry news analysis. It is designed to help retailers better understand the implications of industry events on their dealership operations.
