 GOODYEAR AND KELLY INCLUDED IN STUDY
 AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- J.D. Power and Associates consumer survey on the tire industry included 20 tire manufacturers. J.D. Power and Associates does not reveal those brands ranking below industry average. Only nine brands ranked higher than the industry average.
 "All major tire brands were included in this inaugural study," commented Steve Goodall, partner in charge of the Detroit office of J.D. Power and Associates. "J.D. Power and Associates' policy dictates that a ranking of brands below industry average not be made public. The purpose is to highlight those manufacturers who are responding to customer satisfaction issues without denigrating those who rank below average."
 As previously reported, the following were the top brands above industry average. In ranking order they are: Michelin, Big O, Armstrong, Pirelli and Bridgestone (tied for fourth), Cooper, BF Goodrich, Toyo and Uniroyal. The following brands (listed in alphabetical order) were below industry average: Continental, Dunlop Firestone, General, Goodyear, Kelly, Remington, Riken, Sears, Vogue and Yokohama.
 The J.D. Power and Associates 1992 Replacement Tire Study represents responses from more than 31,000 consumers. According to Goodall, "Statistically this represents a completely valid and reliable sample meeting all sampling and statistical requirements. Political polls, as an example, are statistically valid with 1,500 to 2,000 responses representing the U.S. population of over 260 million." He continued, "In this J.D. Power and Associates Replacement Tire Study, for example, Goodyear alone received over 4,900 actual consumer responses. There is no question as to the statistical validity of this study."
 J.D. Power and Associates is an international marketing information firm with headquarters in Agoura Hills, and offices in Detroit, Tokyo and Westport, Conn. The firm is best known for its marketing information and consulting in the areas of consumer opinion and customer satisfaction.
