 J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES AWARDS 'BEST IN PRICE CLASS' VEHICLES
 AGOURA HILLS, Calif., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- J.D. Power and Associates announced a new category of vehicle segments, the Price Class Awards, at their Third Annual Automotive Awards Ceremony at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, Calif. The awardees were determined from marketing information contained in J.D. Power and Associates 1992 Early Buyer, Initial Quality Study. Four 1992 model year vehicles were presented special awards in four, separate price categories. The highest ranked vehicles in their price class categories were:
 -- Toyota Corolla $12,000 and Under
 -- Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera $12,001 to $17,000
 -- Buick Regal Sedan $17,001 to $22,000
 -- Lexus LS 400 $22,001 and Up
 The Initial Quality Study features responses from 33,573 consumers and is one of J.D. Power and Associates' independently funded, nationally syndicated studies. Consumers respond to an eight-page questionnaire requesting information on their 1992 model year vehicle after their first 90 days of ownership. The study then provides details on owner-reported problems based on problems opean vehicles. Consumers today are coming to the realization that vehicles are the product of a global marketplace," commented J. Ferron, senior partner at J.D. Power and Associates. He continued, "The majority of consumers in today's market are much more concerned with which automobiles are the best in the particular price range they can afford. That is how they shop and, therefore, why we have designated these categories. That is the purpose of these designations."
 The four vehicles ranked "Best in Price Class" achieved that status from among close to 150 models evaluated in the initial Quality Study. The price categories were determined based on the median transaction price as reported by consumers. Transaction prices (the actual price paid by the consumer which include rebates, dealer incentives, special financing, etc.), increased in 1992 with the industry reflecting an average median transaction price of $15,910. The Domestics had a median transaction price of $16,000, Asians at $15,000 and Europeans at $30,000.
