AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Results were released today for the J.D. Power and Associates 1993 Original Equipment Tire Satisfaction Study(SM). This is the fifth year the firm has conducted this study which focuses on the vehicle owner's customer satisfaction with the original tires with which their new vehicle was equipped. For the fourth time in five years, Michelin has earned the top ranking. That ranking indicates that owners of vehicles fitted with Michelin tires are more satisfied than owners of any other brand.
Last year's original-equipment (OE) tire satisfaction leader, Pirelli, moved to a second-place ranking. This placement marks a return to form of sorts since Michelin and Pirelli have ranked a close 1 and 2 in four of the past five years the study has been conducted. These two OE tire brands make up the top tier of satisfaction performance, both earning satisfaction index scores that are significantly higher than any of the remaining 10 tire brands featured in the study.
The second tier in satisfaction performance consists of three brands that all earn index scores that are roughly equal to the industry average score. These brands are: BF Goodrich, Firestone and Goodyear. Both BF Goodrich and Firestone registered strong satisfaction improvements this year, elevating them from below industry average in last year's study. The remaining seven OE tire brands all earn satisfaction index scores below industry average. These brands, in alphabetical order are: Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, General, Toyo, Uniroyal and Yokohama.
"This year's study illustrates that the car or truck owner's overall customer satisfaction with the original tires on the vehicle is continuing to improve," commented J.D. Power III, president and founder of J.D. Power and Associates. "This improvement, however, appears to be happening at a slow, but steady rate."
The results of this year's study also show that car owners are more satisfied with their OE tires than are truck owners. Specifically, the industry average for car owners is 119 while the average score for truck owners is 101. There continues to be a strong link between high levels of customer satisfaction and high levels of repurchase intent for tires. In fact, in a separate study released in June by J.D. Power and Associates, the 1993 Replacement Tire Study, Michelin ranked best overall replacement tire. That study measures satisfaction with tires that consumers purchase when their OE tires need replacement.
"Tire brands with higher satisfaction levels tend to earn higher levels of repurchase intent from consumers," according to J.D. Power III. "This is extremely important since high repurchase intent translates into high actual loyalty when it comes time for a consumer to replace their original tires."
In addition to the best overall tire brand, the study also reports on individual tire models. The study reveals that there is tremendous variability among the over 100 individual tire models available as OE tires. The highest-ranking tire model earned an index score of 168 while the lowest had a score of less than 30. Of the 50 highest volume models ranked in the study, the top 10 individual models, in alphabetical order are: Bridgestone Potenza RE71, Goodyear Eagle GS-C, Goodyear Eagle GT+4, Michelin MXT4, Michelin XGT4, Michelin MXV4, Michelin XW4, Michelin XZ4, Pirelli P2000 and Pirelli P5.
