J.C. PENNEY SALES UP 4.8 PERCENT IN APRIL

 PLANO, Texas, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Sales of J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP) stores for the four weeks ended May 1, 1993, increased 4.8 percent to $1,033 million from $985 million in the 1992 period. On a comparable store basis, that is stores open at least a year, sales increased 4.0 percent.
 Commenting on April business, chairman of the board William R. Howell said that April sales reflected good demand for jewelry; women's and men's sportswear; infants' apparel; bedding; and furniture.
 For the 13 weeks ended May 1, 1993, sales of J.C. Penney stores were up 5.5 percent to $2,925 million from $2,772 million for the same period a year earlier. On a comparable store basis, sales increased 4.7 percent.
