 J&M LABORATORIES ANNOUNCES NON-TOXIC, FOOD-SAFE LUBRICANT
LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A new series of non-toxic, water soluble lubricants suitable for all food processing equipment applications is being marketed nationally, it was announced today.
The food grade TL lubricants, manufactured by Union Carbide Corp. under contract for J&M Laboratories, Inc., are long-lasting, alcohol based synthetics. J&M, a 20-year-old firm based in Louisville, is marketing the product in two grades with different viscosities, TL220B and TL400B.
"Our TL products give processors a machine lubricant that is safe in the presence of foodstuffs. And, the potential savings are enormous," said Joseph K. Mitzlaff, president of J&M Laboratories.
Because the TL lubricants are manufactured with different trace dyes, processors can use color codes to identify the source of any leaks in production equipment, Mitzlaff said. Splatters of lubricant would show up immediately in processed food, indicating exactly where the contamination occurred.
Even in minute amounts, conventional lubricants can cause the formation of carcinogens in foodstuffs, Mitzlaff said.
"With commonly used lubricants, batches of agricultural products being processed would have to be thrown away because of the presence of potential contamination and the inability to see where the contamination took place," Mitzlaff said.
"Our products are safe, and with the tracer dye, you can see the problem area right away."
Chemically, the lubricant is very stable and has a high flashpoint, reducing the danger of fire, he said. The material meets the standards in FDA Regulation 21 CFR 178.3570.
Gearboxes using the lubricant operate at temperatures 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than conventional materials, reducing wear and tear on the equipment, Mitzlaff said.
J&M Laboratories manufactures a variety of water treatment and process chemicals for industry.
